Nelson Named Advisor of Design for Aging

By:

Diekema Hamann is pleased to announce that Vicki Nelson, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP has been selected to serve on the seven-person advisory group for the American Institute of Architects, Design for Aging Knowledge Community (DFA).

DFA's mission is to enhance the built environment and quality of life for an aging society through innovative design and the dissemination of knowledge. The selection to the DFA Advisory Group affords Vicki the opportunity to lead the national discussion on the relationship between design and elderly and end-of-life care.

Nelson, head of design at Diekema Hamann, has focused on healthcare architecture for the better part of her 30-year career and has been featured as a speaker at national and state conferences on long-term care design. She has led the firm to receive design recognition by the American Institute of Architects and numerous healthcare and construction industry organizations.

Current initiatives of DFA include: advocacy to promote change to regulations that challenge the design of environments for older adults, post-occupancy evaluations of facilities designed for the aging to provide a foundation for evidence based design, and Next Generation, a competition to promote interest in this important facility type among today's architecture students.
