Project Brief

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Eaton Hospital has transformed underutilized spaces into a state-of-the-art Oncology and Infusion Center, bringing advanced cancer care closer to home for residents of Eaton County. This renovation includes a Point of Care Clinic and an Infusion Center, both supported by a dedicated waiting area and a separate entrance to enhance patient accessibility.

The design process involved extensive staff collaboration, prioritizing patient safety and streamlined care delivery. A centralized nurse station offers clear visibility of patient bays, and essential staff areas, including a medication room, are strategically located nearby. Adjacent to the infusion unit, a dedicated staff lounge, restroom, and lockers provide caregivers with convenient spaces for respite.

The project team worked closely with the construction manager to implement best practices and address critical path items, effectively mitigating potential material delays. Challenging existing conditions required creative coordination between this multi-disciplinary design and engineering team. The overall project included a new parking lot, mechanical systems, and revised life safety approaches. Diekema Hamann worked closely with local code enforcement to provide unique solutions to an aged building.

Funding for the project was secured in part through a generous community donation and grant from the state of Michigan. This initiative significantly reduces travel time for patients requiring frequent treatments, such as chemotherapy, by providing high-quality care within their community.

Patients completing their treatment are invited to "ring the bell" and celebrate the conclusion of this step on their cancer journey.
