VAMC Battle Creek Food Service Renovations
Diekema Hamann Architecture + Engineering was selected to renovate the commercial Kitchen at the VAMC in Battle Creek, Michigan. The work included assessing the existing conditions from a finishes, HVAC, electrical, kitchen equipment, and code perspective.
The overall objective was to upgrade the finishes to provide an overall sense of continuity with campus standards, modernize the kitchen equipment deemed to have exceeded their service life, upgrade the HVAC system so that it met the needs of the entire Kitchen facility, and correct any code issues that needed updating. These renovations also needed to meet Federal Guidelines with the goals for a Green facility design, the Planetree Model, and Energy Conservation.
The end result is an improvement on the ventilation and humidity controls which includes exhaust in the dish-washing area and a new hood over the cooking equipment. A temporary kitchen was created to accommodate the complex and highly detailed phasing of work while keeping the kitchen operational during construction. There will be a complete floor replacement and the existing glazed block walls will be skinned with a monolithic hygienic wall panel system.
